in two steps: initially is erogated in rtp from the server to itself on port 64099, then this transmission is
forwarded as it is in http on port 64088 and last proxed by apache on port 80. |

externally generated stream, may be not available, |
These native streams are viewable on whatever device where VLC can be installed.
VLC is available for PC as well Mac platforms (see VLC website for more informations)
On a windows PC (but the version for other OSs are similar) to load a stream directly, click on Media -> Open Network Stream and in the windows it will opens, type the URL of the desired stream.
About smartphone, I'm using VLC player for android, still in beta version (0.1.3), but it works quite fine (despite of the warning about the risks for your cat, and a user interface quite poor compared to desktop program).
home_720p h264 reproduced with android VLC player on a Samsung Note2 (GT-N7100) quad core with android 4.1.2
I've decoded on this phone even a 1080p50
The next three screenshots show how to recall a http stream with VLC app.
On android devices, after installing VLC beta (always from the google market) |
||
click over the "point" icon ... |
..a text windows will open |
...and type the URL of the stream. |
The URL can be written in three ways:
using the ipaddress
using the main alias of the DNS
usinge the alternative alias of the DNS
On mobile phones, please use only low bitrate streams (up to 500 Kbps) excluding the case in which you are connected via wifi with a reliable download or in HSDPA.
3g data bandwidth depends on coverage and this may not be able to supply more than 500 Kbps.
If you can, please collaborate to the VLC Android testbed forum and do not forget that
in these pages you could find solution to some of your Android VLC troubles.
At the moment the beta version 0.1.3 does not recognize the loop and stops the reproduction at any loop.
Back to index.html
The webpages linked in the following table are intended to be browsed through a personal computer where is available the VLC plug-in (so Windows, MAC, Linux, etc, see VLC website for more informations)
At the moment the plug-in architecture model is not fashinating smartphones software geeks, it means that if you recall these pages -- the same pages you
are able to see on a laptop -- in place of the video you'll get this placeholder:
informing of the unavailability of the VLC plug-in (what shown is what Firefox shows but it's alike for Chrome and Opera).
The player usually invoked by browser with embeds, in smartphone apps is included in the application itself.
Because Adobe do not support any flash app for smartphones apps, to view YouTube contents you cannot use Firefox but you must use the YouTube app or browsers (like Opera or Skyfire) that embeds an open source flash player.
The same happens for Microsoft's Silverlight: RAI, italian national broadcaster, releases an android and IOS specific application to let people view through phones/pads its transmissions via web.
What is sure is that there is no VLC plug-in for android porting of firefox, so all the following webpages embedding an MPEG2 TS or mp4 stream if recalled will from a smartphone will generate that warning instead of showing the video
This last page embeds two streams one (the first from top), a short loop always available generated in RTP by the server itself and proxed in http (http://www.iginomanfre.it/rtp_int, embedded also in the mother of this page); the second is the http forward of an external RTP stream. It will show something only if I'm transmitting something. I.e. this second stream is usually empty because present only if the server receive someting on the RTP port it's listening. If available the proxed stream is http://www.iginomanfre.it/rtp_ext.
If you want to see your stream there, contact me by mail (igino.manfre@gmail.com) or call me by phone (+39 3358235346) or through skype (igino.manfre, usually on).
As explained in the page, I've tested with a PAL stream upload through mobile data network (HSDPA) compressed in h264 at 700 Kbps, while from a plain ADSL is usually possible to upload no more than 200 Kbps stream.
This is the only limitation because the streaming method allow to fully exploit the Gbps bandwidth of the server with no useless duplications.
